A new Final Fantasy XVI video appeared at the annual FFXIV New Year Mahjong tournament. FFXVI Creative Director Kazutoyo Maehiro made the pixel art animation, which featured Clive and his dog Torgal running. It a brief clip, only running for about two minutes while a chiptune version of a song from the game plays in the background. Composer Masayoshi Soken also commented on the video after the fact, calling its song “my first piece this year.” [Thanks, Aitaikimochi!]
The video features the grown-up versions of both Clive and Torgal from FFXVI. Each of them are running along a grassy plain. In the background is the city of Oriflamme, which is the Holy Empire of Sanbreque’s capital. The game’s logo appears at the upper left corner. Its June 2023 release date appears below that. Finally, it notes that it is possible to pre-order the game.
Here is Aitaikimochi’s tweet isolating the FFXVI pixel art animation from the NicoNico broadcast.

The FFXIV Mahjong tournaments are regular affairs. Members of Square Enix development teams and voice actors often participate. For example, Director and Producer Naoki Yoshida tends to always be there.
Final Fantasy XVI will come to the PlayStation 5 on June 22, 2023. It will be a PS5 exclusive for six months.
